It is without a doubt that as pet parents we want the best for our animals. And when it comes to alternative medicine things can get confusing and quite frankly, overwhelming. There are so many products on the market that claim to be your one and only, but the only person to determine the product you and your pet need, is the two of you.

According to American Kennel Club’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, CBD is used for its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact and for possible anti-cancer benefits (although there is no conclusive data on this). Other pet owners and veterinarians have claimed to use CBD to treat pain, neuropathic pain and helping to control seizures.

What scientists know is that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). To learn more about the ECS in detail please click here. This is a complex system in both human and animals to help keep our bodies balanced.

And like humans, dosage depends on the animal. We suggest starting with a low amount and gradually increasing until the desired result is achieved. We always recommend consulting with your veterinarian if your pet is on any medication.

When giving your pet CBD for the first time it’s important to keep a close eye on them to ensure they are responding well. Side effects of CBD in pets and/or giving too much can be:

  • Dry mouth: research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva.
  • Lethargy: thanks to the calming agent in CBD, some pet owners use it to treat anxiety. However, too much can cause drowsiness.
  • Lowered blood pressure: too much CBD has been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure, creating a brief feeling of light-headedness.
  • And in some cases vomiting

When shopping for CBD it is important to note the source of the CBD. Reliable CBD companies are transparent and honest with the CBD they use, and host lab results on their website.
